The 420 Store – Daily Update #1
Posted on July 11th, 2009 24 commentsIt’s been over 24 hours now since I let the public start poking around the store. How are things doing? Let’s have a recap.
- Three separate bugs related to payments were found and fixed
- Several missing countries were added
- Drastic speed improvements bringing page load times from 15 seconds down to 2-3 on average
- Lots of whining
That last one brings me to my next point. E-commerce solutions are a gigantic pain in the ass to work with, especially when you’re doing it all yourself. The amount of work required to add a single shirt design to the catalog involves repeating the same steps 40-50 times to account for every variant, as every size, gender, and color difference is counted as a separate product. Those 40-50 variants take close to 2 hours to add and set up. Multiply this over several designs while you’re still working on dozens of other things at the same time. Not only is launching an effort like this expensive, it’s also a ton of hard work.
Speaking of expensive, a lot of people are complaining that the prices are too high. Most of them aren’t noticing the bold text stating “All prices are in Canadian Dollars”. Subtract about $4-5 from the items and you have the price in USD. The other group of people are assuming we have a large pool of funds and the equipment to make selling shirts for $13 an option. We’re just starting this store, and the entire purpose of it to begin with is to replace the old tired routine of having to ask for donations to pay for the place every month. This is our way of giving back to you, for supporting us. This is also why we refused to use anything like Cafepress – that would be taking the easy way out. No real effort involved, it wouldn’t really mean anything, and that’s exactly what we want to avoid. We’re working our asses off for you.
Some of you, however, still want the ability to donate. We have something planned to accommodate this.
Sometime this afternoon there’ll be new threads posted about the store, and we want to collect as much feedback as possible as we add more items. Constructive feedback, not dumb crap.
Lastly, as soon as the majority of the current planned catalog is added, we’ll begin to display the store more prominently. Some people were wondering why we haven’t announced it on the front page or put any banners up or anything. We want it to be complete, first.

my hat’s off to you for the effort you’ve put into this. keep it up.
I don’t mean this to be whining, but as soon as more designs that appeal to me are available, I’ll be putting in orders. until then, I’m still impressed by your hard work, though I won’t be ordering anything.

I like the shop front so far. I was really hoping for a lighter with the 420 logo on it. That’d be sweet. Other than that, I am excited about the progress! Keep it up!

Jesus — you’d think you could create a script for those 40-50 operations, which sound like they’re essentially mindless (and therefore scream automation). It would be a lot more fun to work 10 hours on a script to do the work than spend 5 hours doing it, in my opinion, even if it doesn’t make sense time-wise. Assembly line sucks, especially on a fucking computer. Makes me want to die.
Also, wherethefuck is the store? Can’t find it anywhere. I always cheat and use disc.420chan.org/board anyway because I don’t like to go through stuff when I’m checking 420chan 20 times a day.

There must be SOME way to speed up that process. Ask /tech/ or /prog/.

what the hell is the logo? it looks cool as shit but i have never seen in it years of lurking. is it the store logo and previously had nothing to do with 420chan?
also, that dicks everywhere shirt doesn thave 420store on it, does it?

You need to hit up some color-changing flash drives for the site man.
I’m tellin you, you could corner the market on that shit. Try finding some on google or amazon. NONE.
Fucking do it.

I know a guy who can get you nice American Apparel shirts printed and shipped to your door for about 6 USD per shirt (number of inks and quantity ordered [figure is from 3 ink design at 100 shirts] will affect this shit). The people expecting 13$ shirts are not crazy, nor is it something you need lots of cash to start with.

Oh furthermore, in magento is pretty easy to set up different options for a product. Set up your configurable attributes. Make a configurable product for each design. Have it spawn the simple products from there. Disable the configurable product (I don’t know if this is needed, but our set up needed this… its been awhile since I hacked that up.) I did offer my help several times before, but received no response. Good luck with your store – and trying to make 420chan self-sustainable!

You mind explaining the technical jumps you had to go through to design this?
I’m just interested in what goes into designing an online store. I’m afraid bigger sites have spoiled most web users so we don’t really know what its like to DIY.
Also lighters, customizable anything etc. sounds really awesome and cool. I’d definitely buy one.

Jiggly Puff if you want a Captain Tinal helm, just get a white box about the size of your head, a sharpie, and a knife. You may have you ask your parent’s permission to use a knife.

BAWWWWWWW. YOU GONNA CRY KIRT? You might actually have to do work to keep the website running instead of just drinking/smoking in front of a camera, which any idiot can do.

Because Kirtaner sure didn’t code half the site or anything.
This is really cool, my Master. We await our future TCC-tan poster and sticker with great happiness.

I love that you actually explain the technical problems to us rather than leave us in the dark like most sites. It seems like getting a script written would be a good idea since then adding stuff to the site in the future won’t take much time to do.
I don’t mind playing $25(CA) for an awesome shirt from the store since first of all it isn’t expensive for a shirt, also I used to donate to the store so I consider this a donation with y’all sending me cool free shit.

@ retarded anonymous comment a few posts up
You have one post, over every single board, in /other/, of a facepalm image. You’re an amazing contributor to this community, let me tell you! I already had to work my ass off to keep this place running.

To whom it may concern:
Do you have any plans of putting hats up for sale?
I would cream my pants for a /wooo/ skullcap. -

How much did it cost to set up a merchant account or did you use a third party provider? Can you give us an estimate of your initial investment in this enterprise. I’m just curious is all.
